Challenges faced

Challenges faced in the Village & School

  • Turtuk being one of the northernmost village of India. There are hardly any resources available in the village.
  • The winters are extremely harsh with temperatures falling to – 15° C .
  • The water is completely frozen and the villagers have to walk quite a distance to feth underground water.
  • Most of the time villagers depend on dried vegetables as the road to Ladakh from Kashmir shuts due to heavy snow fall, no fresh vegetable or fruit reach. By the end of winters even essentials run out of stock in the stores.
  • Ladakh does not have forests which means there is no easy availability of wood to burn for cooking to heating. One has to depend on LPG gas or kerosene which they buy from ration stores.
  • Health facility in the village is limited and during severe emergencies one has to go Leh or Srinagar.
  • Electricity is only for 5 hours a day. That is 6 pm – 11 pm .
  • There is hardly any mobile/ internet connectivity. Most of the days it is completely shut due to faults making it impossible to make a single call or send sms.
  • All the recourses that have to be brought for the school are purchased in Delhi/Mumbai and sent via cargo / India post to the village which takes about 2 months to reach whereas the cost spent is very high.
  • Even the furniture and essentials for the school are bought / made in Leh and brought to school by crossing one of the Highest Motorable pass in the world – Khardung-La, due to which the transport cost for every little thing shoots up.
  • Since the school is in a rented building It is very difficult to accommodate the growing number of students from across the villages seeking for admission which we feel is unfair if we do not give them the opportunity.
